Each year the California School Library Association holds a conference on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Every other year it's in Sacramento and I am lucky enough that my principal thinks it's a good thing for me to go to. So I packed my bags and headed to Sac for three days of workshops, lectures, books and a hotel room to myself.
I love good children's literature and getting a chance to spend several days hearing and reading it is all good in my book. Here are just a few my favorites from this weekend. If you are doing Christmas shopping for children you just can't go wrong with a good book.
Too Many Toys by David Shannon (There is a reference in this book about stepping barefoot on a Lego piece that makes the whole book. It's the kind of book that parents will love reading more than once.)
The Pigeon Wants a Puppy by Mo
Willems (If you haven't read one of these Pigeon books you are missing out on a really funny book and if you've ever wanted a pet and didn't get one you can relate to Pigeon.)
Hilda Must Be Dancing by Karma Wilson (Hilda is a hippo, ahem, on the hefty side and she makes a big, funny impact when she dances.)Peter Pan by Robert
Sabuda (This is a pop-up book and if you've ever seen any of
Sabuda's other books you will recognize his magical style. This is a gift book for older kids.)
Bats at the Beach and
Bats at the Library by Brian Lies (This is such a clever book. In the first one the bats head with all their gear for a night at the beach, swimming, sailing and roasting insect filled marshmallows. The second book has the same group heading into the library one evening to hear stories and play with the copier.)
