2010! It's a new decade. To think it was only 10 years ago we all were waiting to see what would happen when the clock struck midnight on the year 2000. We were worried about what would happen to our electricity and our computers and our digital clocks when the ball dropped.
Now here we are, ten years later. A little older and hopefully a lot wiser. Technology didn't dry up and vanish with the new millennium. Instead we found new ways to advance it and make it part of our daily lives.
Where our mothers used to have to sit down and write a letter to a distant friend or use the phone to talk (but only as far as the cord could reach) we use Facebook, and blogs, and personal websites. We email, and text, and use online photo sharing.
I remember reading many years ago an expert's prediction that we would become terrible about personal relationships because we would only be contacting each other by email. I don't think that ominous prediction has come true. In fact, sometimes we end up with a little too much information about our loved ones because it's so easy to keep in contact.
But I love that I can take a picture of my darling grandson and share it immediately with his mom and other grandma, not to mention his aunts and cousins. I don't have to worry about film or taking it in to be processed or going back to pick it up or even mailing the pictures off to family.
There were lots of things that happened in this last decade that I didn't enjoy. There were many tears shed, and losses, and disappointments, and really scary stuff. But for every sadness there were joyful moments too plentiful to count. I'm looking forward to this decade and especially to this year. Whether you call it two thousand ten or twenty ten, I just know it's going to be a great one.
